Well, here I am again. Finally on track with work, involved in a health challenge program at church. Weather is still rainy and gray and wet and depressing and...and...and.
My prayer is PLEASE: Bring us the SUN! No wonder NW'ers are sun worshipers!
Even my cat is cranky!
Well, son is out of Iraq and will be home soon. DIL is visiting her new nephew! So precious! Whew! I feel their anxiety and excitement to start the new phase of 'the rest of their lives' and get on with life outside the Navy!
I'm so proud to hear that my D and SIL are getting all that really HARD, NASTY remodeling work done on their bathroom. I know it will be really beautiful when it is finished! They do wonderful work between the two of them!
We had a funny incident with one of our 4-5 year old preschoolers the other day. Our SLP is pg and as we were out in the hall playing a 'Simon Says' type game, he seemed to take a long look at her and said tentatively: "What...what's wrong wif yoursef......your...your tummy.....and (at this point he put his hands on his behind) and...and......(as though he's hesitating to say "butt")...ALL of you?"
It was all I could do not to fall on the floor laughing, he was so serious! She said to him, "Yes, my tummy is getting bigger because there's a baby inside." and all the kids were dead silent and just looked at her......you have to realize she's 5'11", so they were really looking UP and their little mouths dropped open. Then the moment passed and we went on. But, oh, what a laugh we had afterward. This little child is one who is shy socially and doesn't have a lot of good social skills, but he was really working on it!
In another incident related to her pregnancy, she was adjusting her body and clothing to sit on one of the little chairs and said to her small group, "You may have noticed my tummy getting bigger. That's because there's a baby growing inside." One child was silent for a minute or so, then asked wonderingly, "How did you get it in your mouth?" Yet another "Kids say the darndest things" moment!!!!
Kids are so beautiful in their innocence. I really treasure working with them and opening their world to them as truthfully and beautifully as I can, with lots of FUN thrown in there.
At this point, I also have to apologize to my children for not giving them more FUN in their childhoods. I was much too serious as a parent! But now, when they are ready to be parents (remember, once a parent, always a parent!) I will make a fantastic Grandma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm in the midst of this 'next generation' as many of my colleagues, who are the age of my children, are having their first babies; I work with babies as well. So I've been roaming the baby sections of the stores I visit, checking on the latest and most innovative things to keep baby happy! I still believe that adoring parents (who set appropriate limits!) and the simplest of playthings is best! (Including, dirt, water, balls, pots and pans, paper, bubbles, Time with parents to play on the floor, puppies and kitties, etc.)
Well, my home visit this a.m. was cancelled as there was a bomb scare at the high school near where this family lives. SO...here I am at the office. I have lots to do here, too, but couldn't resist taking some time to update the blog. I finally get my cable internet on Monday and I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Off to lunch.....hmmm, diet starts next Sunday, so today I'll have..........

back at the ranch...
My winter break from work is over and I've begun again. I'm glad to be back on a regular schedule, as it was rather lonely without the company of my kids over the break. They visited in-laws, other family out of state. I have to resolve myself to this, as it is life.....roots to wings...and all that. I had some opportunity to visit with friends and did not spend Christmas alone, but it isn't the same as having your own special kids around.
It is really a dicotomy, this being overwhelmed with social-ness or being alone. When my kids were small, I thought I'd lost my 'self': I thought I was going crazy. As I was so busy, I hardly had time to sleep, let alone 'reflect' and 'pause' for R&R. I don't really know how it has all happened like it has,why I made some really stupid choices along the way. I praise God for the blessings...my two and their loving spouses...and the fact He's saved me from completely destroying them and me! I'm glad He's loving and forgiving.
When I'm home alone I get all stuck to the couch and end up perseverating on clicking the TV remote. It's bad. That leads to more snacking, less nutrition and exercise....you get the picture. So I'm really glad to be back in the routine of life and working, again. There is something to be said for work. God did give it to us to help us maintain sanity. Of course it could be used the wrong way, as with anything else in life. Moderation......it all takes moderation, or balance, if you like that term better. It is taking me a lifetime to learn that balance.
I just heard today that brain research is telling us that the neural pathways we use to watch TV and play video games are the same used when we use drugs/alcohol......makes sense to me. It is just as addicting and just as destructive. I don't have the research proof at this point, so don't quote me. Even if it isn't scientifically proven, it is an interesting point to ponder. I sure think the students I work with are affected similarly.
It is already dark and I need to drive home in the rain. Not just 'rain' but downpour, 24/7 gray NW rain. Ugh. At least the classrooms are brightly lit. I'm sorry, but low light, even for 'romantics' is not for me. Light up the world! (This is January in O!)
I'm rattling on. I don't have internet at home right now, as I'm tranferring from dial up to cable and I have to save a few more pennies. One step at a time. It is frustrating to have no internet at all at home; makes me feel isolated from the world...even with lots of traffic swishing by my place 24/7!
Happy New Year to you and yours!
PS I finally did get my Christmas decor put away!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Well, here we are. Another year all scribbled over with multiple happenings, a few joyful and a few heart wrenching. Mostly, perseverance shows through, as we slog through our lives day by day.
Today, I actually threw OUT the last of the goodies from Christmas. The torrential rains stopped and the clouds lifted a little (still overcast, though) and I just HAD to get out and walk. I had a bad case of cabin fever from running from the garage to the house and staying inside to stay dry. The rivers and streams are at flood stage, many overflowing their banks. (I wish my bank would overflow...not with water, but with $!). So I took my usual route to the park, today, and then walked down to the river's edge.....not so far away! The riverside condos lower garage was totally empty in prep for possible flooding and the park's dimensions were quite limited! Several picnic tables had water up to the top of the tables. Benches peaked through the water. Around the bridge lots of debris had collected. That can't be good for the bridge, as it is crumbling and there is lots of discussion about what kind of bridge to replace it with. Ah, bureacracy! I hope someone doesn't end up dying because of their political agendas!
My walk was just what I needed! I breathed in the fresh cool air and warmed up enough to peel off the top coat layer! I probably walked about 3.5-4 miles. I wore my Navy sweatsuit; I always get lots of smiles and 'hellos' when I wear it. I wear it proudly for my son! I double backed through the path in the park. I heard all the little chicadees and winter birds and saw a lot of squirrels. Even the sound of the breeze blowing through the tall firs and pines was heavenly! Most people had already walked their dogs, so the squirrels were out nibbling on all the little seeds, etc. They didn't even seem afraid of me, but would simply turn their backs when they saw me......out of sight, out of mind!
I didn't see any unusual birds or the herons and eagles I like to see. I think they were in the shallows, and over fields, instead of the marsh, as it was also quite deeply flooded.
Its a good way to start the new year. One more week of partial time off work and then it is full time again. I could really get used to working 2.5 days a week. When can I retire?
I came back and fixed myself my special, healthy waffles while I ate a really yummy, juicy orange! I added real maple syup for the sweetener.......Yummmmmmmmmm. Crispy and with that wonderful heart shape from the waffle iron I got from my kids! So fun!

New Year Approaching...
It's the last day of this year; Too early for me to reflect on the good, bad and the ugly. I just know that right now I'm relishing in being home in the quiet (the traffic outside is minimal!) and not having to drive and walk around in the torrential rains we've been having!
For Christmas I gave myself one of those blenders called "Magic Bullet". It is small, has several mugs that you can blend up enough stuff for one serving and that is perfect for me! I love to make smoothies in the evening and I have had a lot of fun doing that! They are so much better for me than ice cream, which I crave! So I've been dreaming up recipes to try. There is a small recipe book included which gives me ideas; but mostly I want to make my own salad dressings, smoothies and sauces that will be vegan; as I continue to strive toward eating more healthy. I didn't do well over the holiday with lots of chocolate candy and cookies around. Finally, I just felt sick and have begun eating better, again. It is a lifelong struggle for me.
Then yesterday I also bought a 'tinged' green 5 x 8 carpet for my living room. It looks rather 'naked'. I think I will look for a cheap coffee table. I've been wanting one to put my feet on when I'm relaxing. I'm going to hunt for one with room underneath for books and such. Just a rearranging of junk. The color of the rug might be a good color for the wall, as well, which I am planning on painting. Then its on to a rearrangement and cleaning of the bedroom which is getting piled higher and deeper! Books! I love my books, but what do I do with all of them? The book stores seem to be getting more and more picky about the ones they will buy back. Does the library take them I wonder? Like my DIL, my own library would be nice. My D and SIL have wonderful built in bookcases. They would love a library, too, I'm sure. Maybe as they expand their home, a library will take shape! They do great work!
We had an agape feast at church last evening, and, believe it or not, I went to it. It was a little different from other communions I've attended, but nice. After the foot washing, we all went to the fellowship hall, where tables were set up banquet style in the shape of a cross, with some extra round tables set up. Candles lit the room, with plates of homemade bread and fruit arranged. On each plate was the traditional small piece of communion bread and pure grape juice. The pastor didn't do the usual reading in parts where the bread and 'wine' are eaten, but told us to remain silent as we ate and drank our traditional bread and wine and think of Jesus' sacrifice for us. It was very meaningful. Then, we were invited to eat of the larger 'unblessed' plates of bread and fruit while a microphone was passed around to talk of Jesus' blessings on us for the last year. It was good. Sitting at that long, long table reminded me of how it might be in heaven at the long feast Jesus will have with us. As we sat at the table, we were sitting close to each other, yet it was cozy and not claustrophobic. It was a good 'family' feeling. I really am glad I'm going to this church. We sang a few hymns and went home.
I also talked to a couple of people who are doing our next CHIP program in February and told them I'd help cook, etc. It will be busy, but fun. AND it will really get me back on track.
Christmas was quiet, as my kids were elsewhere, but I spent the day with my friend and her grandkids and that was fun and laid back; so the day wasn't completely a loss. I've worked some days during my long winter break, so I wouldn't go stark raving mad at home; even though I have plenty of projects, I tend not to do them, unless I have some outside structure in my life! I'm ready to take down my few Christmas decorations now. I bought a really cute Gingerbread house from Party LIte to add to the nice decorations I'm exchanging for the cheap crap I'd collected. Christmas eve I lighted all my holiday candles and listened to Christmas music and watched a good holiday movie on TV.
[o0 (Lilo's hello)] It was comforting and relaxing!
Yesterday I got two coworkers together and we slogged over rain swollen, flood crested bridges and roads, detoured around mud slides, and hauled equipment through the rain to a house in the country (I mean backwoods!) where one of our severely disabled students lives. We took out a desk and computer on which the disabled mom could learn to use word processing and children's games. The child can learn to use a switch to make games play....he doesn't have enough motor control to run a mouse. It would be hard to describe this family unit, but basically the mom has run off and has very little contact with her child, so the child lives with an aunt, who is disabled and the Great Grandmother in a small, but clean, trailer out in the middle of nowhere! It is amazing that they continue to travel clear into inner Portland to the big hospitals to get special therapy for the child. It's probably 30-35 miles one way. The child is getting tall and broad; they can hardly handle her! I fear what may happen if something should happen to her caregivers.
I have much for which to be thankful....and so do YOU!
Have a happy last day of this year, stay safe and may God show you His love! Hug your children..or spouse or whoever is closest to you!

Dear Santa
I know you are probably already on your rounds, but I felt the need to write you a letter.. I don't know how you do it each year with the population growth. Please don't forget those children around the world whose lives are limited by any number of 'disabilities'....social or otherwise.
Frankly, I am feeling quite sorry for myself tonight, yet so very thankful at the same time. I miss having my children with me, enjoying time together. When I'm by myself I start wishing to have 'things', but when they are here, I don't even care if there is a Christmas tree! It is just SO wonderful to be with them, laughing and sharing and feeling close.
I'm glad they are, for the most part, with other family and enjoying the celebration of the holidays. I just pray that my son in Iraq is safe and will feel family love extending out to him, though he's so far from home.
So, my American gluttony list goes like this: a carpet for my living room; a new couch; a set of semi-fine china such as Lenox' Butler's pantry or there's a similar one by Mikasa; a new set of stainless steel-ware for 12....somewhere I have the name of the pattern I've chosen, but you know what it is, Santa!; a Scungii steam cleaner (I still can't find the one my daughter loaned me! -- I hate getting old and forgetful! Do your elves help you out on this one, Santa?); a new laptop with DVD capabilities and personal lessons on how to use the thing; DSL-- better yet, wireless; lessons on how to use my new cell phone; a new car; new wardrobe (even one of my students asked my why I always wear the same thing...this from a 4 year old! You probably know him, Santa! Maybe you can give his parents a calm Christmas; they need it with that little guy!) I don't need any diamonds or furs...though I do enjoy wearing furs (they can be fake!) but it is generally too warm here to enjoy wearing them!
I drive myself crazy with my lack of financial stewardship and would be really excited, Santa, if you would see your way to bring me about $50,000. That would pay off all my school debts and the rest and even buy that new car I want, as well as get me into a house of my own, though I'll need enough to pay for a handiman/gardener to live on the premises. I don't have the knowledge or strength to do those hard jobs that continually pop up when one owns a house.
I went to church today and it seemed quite appropriate to have a baptism to celebrate giving.....giving the ultimate: one's life to Jesus. My daughter was baptised on Christmas day a number of years ago. Happy celebration, Sweetie! I do remember that commitment you made. I hope you are reminded as well and feel thankful and full of resolution to be true to your soul.
The weather was outstandingly warm today, up to 60 degrees with only high clouds and very slight breeze. You shouldn't have any trouble finding O. You can give Rudolph a rest for this part of the trip. I went for a long walk as soon as I got home from church...for an hour. It was wonderful and made me much hungrier for a nice lunch. I did eat too much Christmas candy after lunch; gave myself a headache. Took a little nap, too. Now I want to see a nice Christmas movie on TV, but of course there is nothing on. I really detest those 1/2 hour product advertisements....what are they called?
I really miss my son. Too bad you can't bring him home in your sleigh tonight. Do stop by and brighten his day/night....I don't know what work shift he's on.
Have your reindeer Knock three times when you land here. I'm probably one of the few who will offer you fresh fruit and vegetables, toast and hot cocoa for you and your reindeer. (I'm trying to eat healthier). I could use a hug, too. Thanks Santa.
Finally a Christmas movie is on.
Santa, Stay safe and don't forget the small children, the lonely moms, dads and well, anyone who's lonely.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

mmmmmm...owie.........mmmm
Curves is closed because of weather,
Determined to WALK!
Hard to walk in heavy boots and 3+ layers of clothing!
Owie! boots don't fit well!
Doesn't anyone make good boots to fit without
them costing an arm and a leg? Grr.
Mmmmm....crisp cold air
Breathe it in!
Hey! I can breathe! I must be healing!
Mmmmm.....breathe it in!
Ouch, ouch, ouch! Boots making blisters
Poor ducks and geese have no food today,
They need to put out their usual corn.
The slough is frozen over in spots!
Don't see any fowl on the open spots
Few ducks and geese flying over,
they must be down there somewhere!
Owie! Now my toes are numb, too!
Stand up straight, belly sucked in...
Ah, back doesn't hurt.
Note to self....work on posture.
Breathe it in......Mmmmm cold, crisp 'pure' air
I wonder how 'pure' it is? Has the inversion gone?
How much smog am I breathing today?
Ouch! I bet I'm getting heel blisters!
Keep going, you are going to walk for an hour!
Mmmmm....I still like the fresh air!
Breathe!
WHEW! Made it to the turn around.
Time to head home.
Wow! limbs from trees broken off from the high winds last week.
Park is quiet. Only a couple dogs in the dog park.
What's that guy hanging around that building for?
Keep walking; stay alert.
Owwwie! I'm sure I have blisters.
Toes totally numb; not cold now, though.
Maybe I'm getting frostbite on toes since they have no circulation
My kids would laugh at me. :o)
More breathing, more cleansing;
Blow nose for third time.
Wait for FedEx truck to back up over sidewalk,
driver probably can't see me.
Wait! What's this? Oh, oh, oh! A beautiful little song bird!
Right on the other side of the fence.....so glad I saw it...wait!
I bet that's the male and this one might be the female!
I wonder if they are the ones I heard singing such a pretty song!
Note to self: Look it up in bird book at home.
REMEMBER what it looks like!
Twist waist. Roll arms. Ahhh.
Ouch, I've definitely got a blister on each heel!
One foot in front of the other. Just a few blocks more.
Who's standing on my back porch?
Don't know her.
Hi! Can I help you?
Oh, I'm just your neighbor.
Thought I'd stand on your porch while
I wait for my ride.
I tell her: That's okay.
To myself: Hasn't she ever heard of an umbrella?
Would she like me standing on Her porch?
Take it easy. You'd be glad to get of the rain, too.
Relax.
No more breathing.
Go in, take off boots.
R E L I E F! Yep, blister on each heel.
Circulation coming back to toes.
Eat brunch. Take shower.
Run errands.
Clean house.
Finish laundry.
What a horribly messy kitchen.
Keep focused.

Monday B4 Christmas
Time has flown by since my last post. I've been struggling to work while ill. Haven't been totally successful. Finally, after to series of antibiotics and 3 dr. visits later, I think I'm on the road to recovery! AND, I'm on winter break, so I don't have to worry about work until next week!
Yesterday afternoon and evening we had sleet and snow (about an inch). When this happens, the whole city shuts down. I was blessed to be home, all cozy, watching the snowflakes fall. I went outside a couple times to get laundry and enjoyed the crisp clean air and muted noise the snow brings. This morning it is all melting in rain. Surprisingly it is not freezing when it hits the ground, which is a miracle, as the ground has been frozen from about 3 weeks of high velocity, COLD winds and low temperatures!
I continually worry about my children's spiritual health, as well as my own. Recently I've made a renewed commitment to bring my life into a closer connection with God and to do what I feel He expects of me. In church, we've been studying Ephesions 6:10-18, about putting on the "Whole Armor of God" and that has made me think so much of my son in Iraq. They certainly have a lot of armor, and yet, it is often not effective enough. God's armor IS effective and will save us for an eternal life of peace and joy with Him when we choose to use it moment by moment.
I have always had a really hard time dealing with war, whether on a large, world scale, or one to one in personal relationships. I ache that I played a part in causing 'war' between myself and my sis. I just pray that she and I will both heal whatever rifts have caused this separation. And that's another thing.......I do believe that sin is truly our 'separation in relationship' with God. I SO look forward to having my relationships healed on earth and with Him forever, to enjoy being with those I love and never having to worry about saying or doing something that I have failed to be/do honestly, or that my intentions have been misinterpreted. I do pray every single day for my family, that we will all be ready for Jesus' SOON coming.
I feel that God's armor helps us ward of the darkness that bombards us in this world, but we must use this armor if it is to be effective. We interpret our world from our senses. We must guard what comes in through those senses if we are to be able to allow space for God in our brains and hearts.
"Be Strong in the Lord and in His mighty power"...Put on the full armor of God...take your stand aginst the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers...authorities...powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
Belt: of truth
Breastplate: of righteousness

I always think of my Son when we study this Biblical analogy. He used to draw warriors of different kinds, from different eras of history. Now he is a sailor in a dangerous place and I pray that he also has on the armor of God.
I so worry that my kids' senses (from which we are affected for/against God) are centered on the dark things of this world: the movies they choose, the books they read, the games they play, the way they care for their bodies, the relationships they build, the gathering or not gathering of themselves with other Christians. I know it is hard to find true Christians, but they are out there. Most of all, we need to Be one. I want nothing less than for my children to live up to their highest potential. As their mom, I've made plenty of BIG mistakes, for sure, but I did try to give them a solid, MESPSF healthy beginning. I hope they'll forgive me for hurting them in ways I may not have known, and to forgive me for the ways I have hurt them when I didn't consider how very much they would be affected by my actions.
I want to be there for them whenever they need me, now. They just need to ask. I am proud of the adults they have become and want to continue to enjoy the good times and comfort them in the bad times. I know I won't always be around, but our dear Jesus will be. Although we can't 'feel' Jesus arms around us, he puts people in our lives to give us those hugs when we need them, if we are open to them. Those are the friends we develop. I pray my children will have Christian friends with whom they can enjoy life here and later.
I guess being off work, 'house bound' because of the weather, and wrapping gifts for those I love gives me time to reflect on life. I am happy in my work, in my little apartment I call 'home', with the beautiful friends I have, and with my dear, dear family. I have found a church home I enjoy, at long last. And now, I'm going to go enjoy a good exercise at Curves!
I hope you'll have a happy 'Monday B4 Christmas!'

monday evening
Weekend outing with Barb went down the tubes as we both felt like we couldn't take the bitter cold gorge wind to walk around looking at the Christmas lights. Then we also felt like we had colds and wanted to forego making them worse. I did go to a CHIP buffet Sunday evening and learned lots of wonderful recipes for Healthful holiday goodies. The apple pie was scrumptious! I got Christmas cards addressed. I just need to get stamps! I hope that gets done before NEXT Christmas! I made some fudge from scratch.............it turned into a good chocolate syrup (of course I substituted soy milk for regular milk. I made Payday candy bar 'bars' and that turned out yummy. I'm hoping to send some to my dad and Andy. Andy's may not get there before Christmas, but he'll still enjoy them! I found a CHIP recipe for tortilla wrap finger 'sandwiches'. All is right for the holidays! I'm still trying to clear the sinuses....I was going to say I was still 'snorting' but that has a bad connotation to it nowadays. I do sound a bit like reindeer, however.
Little Lilo curled up just like a little baby beside me in bed this morning. She must have been really cold! I finally got her water dish back in working order and she has been spending a lot of time playing with the water. She is something else! Before I got a new filter in it and had taken it apart to clean, she would jump on the little table where I had replaced her special water bowl with just a regular bowl and she would just look at it, back up, look up at the wall and just m-e-o-w. I think she was grieving her special dish! All is right with the world for her now, though.
I'm still at work and just want to go home. I'll write notes tomorrow. It's dark and I hate driving in the dark. Most of the traffic is coming 'at' me, as I head back into the city.

great idea!
I've discovered a fantastic idea...why didn't Martha S. think of it? I never know what to do with the boxes that had all the Christmas decor in them. I hate to put them back in the basement, just to drag them out in a month to put all the stuff away. So! I bought (at the Dollar Store) large, oversized decorated Christmas wrap bags, put the boxes in them, tied a big bow on them and stacked them in a corner of the room as part of the rooms' decor. It really adds a festive touch! Hey, hey, and I don't have to haul them around anymore!
Sabbath morning
Well, another week has gone by. I'm still not feeling recovered from my cold; at least it wasn't the flu! I hate sinus colds!
Missing two days of work put me in a tailspin, especially since we only have next week until our winter break. There is a lot that needs to be done next week. I'm going to be very, very busy! I hope I don't collapse the next week off, as I want to enjoy being with friends and the Christmas season stuff! I will work a couple days the week after Christmas and two the final week of our break. That way, I won't feel completely out of it when we get back full time. Work is, how can I say it, a whirlwind that simply moves from place to place, picking up speed and activity from time to time, and settling back down at intervals.
Well, I found out that our whole office is moving in a year. ESD truly is a vagabond organization. Not only do we itinerant teachers work out of the back of our cars (as offices), but our classrooms are indiscriminately moved from school to school within the districts at their whim. It is maddening, to say the least! Then, our whole agency office has moved 3 times in the last 12 years I've worked there. They continue to renovate and move offices around within whatever building we are in, as well, as the administration attempts to make things 'better' for us. It is a joke! Our 'desks" are these metal work stations that are the size of a large bookcase with two open shelves on top, a pullout shelf for our computers and two lateral file drawers beneath. Of course, if one has the pullout shelf in use, its impossible to get to the file drawers underneath. When we leave our stations for appointments, we have to close our doors and move our chairs out of the way. We are packed one in side by side, 10 to a row. We have no space for a side table, to lay out a file, or anything. There are extra small tables available, but if the person next to you is also present, there is no place to put the table. For a gov't agency, it definitely doesn't use any money on proper office space....at least for us who come and go. Those who are constantly in the office at least have some space of their own. Trying to make a confidential phone call is almost impossible. I often use my cell phone and go outside or to the bathroom or some other enclosed space for those....and we do make those calls with our families, as we discuss their children's difficulties. They tried to make us happy by giving us ergonomic chairs.......it is only one piece of the puzzle!
Well, I started this conversation because of the building moves and got a little sidetracked. The building where we are now located was once an SDA church. It has vaulted ceilings and has been remodeled to accommodate office space. It does not work well as an office, the heat is horrendous (mostly in the stairwells) and the plumbing does not accommodate large groups on a daily basis, so is regularly backed up! Some workers think the place is haunted....so stupid. It is just not made to be an office architecturally!
This last week I heard we will be moving again in a year.....and guess where! The old Oregon Conference office building! I guess the ESD bought it. I think the OC is moving to the campground! Amazing. What is the connection that our agency has with SDAs to keep buying their property? Are the SDAs just selling things cheap? The rumors at the office are that this building is really HUGE and will accommodate us so much better. I've been there many times. It will not We will be crowded in there, as well; just wait. I just thought it incredible that our ESD purchased yet another SDA building. Weird.
Well, not much else. Barb and I plan to do our Christmas get together tonight. Walk through the grotto and have dinner out somewhere. At least it will be early, as she doesn't like to be out late, either. I'm hoping I'll feel up to being peppy and able to keep warm as we walk through the Grotto. Weather here is bitter east winds with low temps. Only thing we've got going for us is the clear skies....no rain! When it does start raining, you can bet we'll have an ice storm, as the ground is so frozen!
Have a good weekend!

Yucky day
Well, seems like lots of life has happened since my last post. Work began after break with a fast pace and has not stopped....unfortunately, my body gave up to a bad cold. It isn't the high fever, achy flu, but just head and chest congestion and general malaise. I've called the doc and I'm supposed to get a callback after lunch. I finally gave it up and stayed home from work yesterday and then, again, today. I thought I'd be okay today, but couldn't sleep well as the congestion was even hurting my ears. I'm still on the steroid inhaler to heal the asthma from my last bronchitis go-round and now I get this on top of it.
I think I've just tried to do too much and it doesn't take much to take me down these day. I don't know how I used to do so much......Well, yes, I do. That's why I burned out so many years ago. I've learned to better pace myself, but not always to say NO!
I ended up working much too hard coordinating an xfamily's wedding reception. I didn't have good vibes in the beginning because I didn't get specific instructions and then, when it all began to happen, there was much more involved and fewer people available to help. Such is the way of the xfamily. (At least all but one grandchild is married now and she doesn't seem to be going that direction. I'm still trying to be nice, I guess. What IS that all about? I guess the xfamily could have been pretty rotten to me, and they weren't at crisis time.)
I felt like I had a slight cold on the wedding day, but thought it would go away, as many have recently, but it was not to be. I made it to work on Monday with lots of cold medications and then crashed on Tuesday. I finally felt well enough late afternoon to run an errand to the post office and to take back a dress to a nearby small store....NOT at the mall. By the time I got home, I was exhausted again. So much for this week. The laundry continues to pile up with the unpaid bills, dust bunnies and piles of unwanted paper.
I get so many catalogues recently. Choke! Just because I look up something on the web doesn't mean I want a stupid catalog! Grrrr. Information is nice, but not without its drawbacks.
Lilo cat is having meltdowns today as I took her fountain water dish apart to clean it. It desperately needs a new filter and I think water from the tap is cleaner than what was circulating in her bowl. Problem is that she loved to play in the water fountain, and I took away her 'toy', so she's roaming the house, getting into things she shouldn't, trying to keep 'busy', finding the 'wrong' things to play with!
It is a blustery day outside. Weather person says the windchill is 29, though the temp is 40. Lilo sits at the window watching the garden flag flutter. Silly cat.
Have read a bit, tired of the same 'ole news and stupid daytime shows. Can't concentrate on reading anything of substance or even addressing Christmas cards, though this is an opportune time to do it........Can you tell I'm feeling very sorry for myself? I have to remember that this, too, shall pass.
This is winter. Maybe I'll put on some holiday music.....I have some piano background music somewhere........................

The Feasting/Giving Thanks
Traveled to WINAS to visit with DIL, her D/SM and my D and SIL. It was so great. My D and SIL really did the all out marathon, driving a longer route to avoid bad roads and then to pick up the D/SM from the airport. They all survived well, thankfully and we had a wonderful time.. My DIL outdid herself cooking at least 3 gourmet meals. We tried to keep up by eating the leftovers whenever we had a moment and before she'd cook up another feast! Saturday ended up being beautiful weather and we enjoyed some outdoor time, being the beach pebble puppies we are. It is so soul filling to be with family, yet one can't really appreciate it all until there is reflection time. I was glad to get back to my quiet little life at home. My kitty was much appreciative of my return and everything was in order on my return.I knew the weather had turned really cold when kitty Lilo stayed curled up next to me all night and didn't even move when I got out of bed to get ready for work!
A busy first day back at work slapped me back to reality of the job. Sometimes it just seems to go on and on and on and............. I guess we are in the doldrum season, just finishing one short holiday and waiting for the longer one!
I still enjoy getting my curriculum together and doing fun projects. The kids are off their usual schedules and can be quite the pills. But I come to love each and every one of them!
Went into my basement to grab a bag of home visit materials this morning and found that a mouse (or mice) had found my bag of bird seed, making a huge mess all over the floor, so I've got to face the clean up of that and make sure there is nothing out for them to use to 'settle in' for the winter. UGH! I hope it isn't rats or squirrels, though I don't know how they'd get in the basement! They smell so ickey and carry so many diseases! Shudder. I am not looking forward to this foray. I'll have to clean out the entire locked area and go through the rest of it to make sure the varmits are not hiding anywhere. Yuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I doubt it all gets done tonight!
Earlier I stuck my neck out to sign up as chairperson of a study group at work; today I had an interesting discussion with our boss concerning how most of the members of that group feel it is just 'one more thing to do' from which we would never see any results of our hard work....and any positive results of the study would ultimately add more work to our already packed schedules! So we revised the whole thing. I think it will get the job done that our boss needs done and allow those who are really not into doing the study group a chance to back out gracefully. We have a good boss!
I'm nervous about this weekend. I've been asked to help 'oversee' the wediding reception process of my ex-niece....I hope I can do it with kindness and make it all happen as the bride/family wants!
It would be really nice to sneak in a movie somewhere with my daughter this weekend (we've both been wanting to see RENT), but I doubt there will be time among all the wedding festivities.
I thought of a lot I wanted to write on my drive back home, but can't think of any of them right now.
A busy first day back at work slapped me back to reality of the job. Sometimes it just seems to go on and on and on and............. I guess we are in the doldrum season, just finishing one short holiday and waiting for the longer one!

Thanksgiving day-after
We've somewhat recovered from the 24 hours of staying up waiting for those driving in and they made it safely (after their 24 hour marathons!). It is so good to be with family on holidays...and especially Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a great time to really reflect and give thanks!
Ch received a Game Cube for her BD and is now trying it out before we go shopping at the commissary and check out some little shops downtown. It is pouring rain and a bit blustery with some wind. But it's okay. It's cozy inside, we have transportation, etc. Frankly I don't see the hype in the games; it seems like more multitasking and 'see how fast you can do it" turns. Too much like life......to be involved in life is really much better. I'm getting to the age of enjoying a slower pace rather than hyping over games AND life. I guess I want my life to be more involved with relationships and can't figure out how these games help build those. Of course, when one is by him/herself, it would be a fun way to pass the time, I guess, but I'd prefer movies, TV or books or walking. I'm too old-school!
We do miss our boy in Iraq and pray and hope he is safe and not too lonely from being away from family on the holiday. Being with other Navy people helps, I think.
I've been eating all this specially prepared food and loving every bite, but know if I keep doing it, I'll feel run down, tired and sick. It was fun to make my vegan waffles this a.m. Ch is great to include my specialties!
I couldn't ask for better 'in-laws' for/with my kids. I'm just in a sappy, thankful mood! I wish all who read this happiness and joy!

Sabbath morning
Went to bed early last night, exhausted. This week has been something else. I had totally lost my voice Monday after teaching afternoon preschool and my throat felt swollen. This, after having been on antibiotics for 3 days for bronchitis/pneumonia or something. I had also been using an inhaler. The inhaler helped some, but wore off quickly. So I went back to the doctor on Tuesday and they took a chest x-ray, front and left side views. Results were they saw some 'blurry spots' in the lungs and weren't sure if it was a healing pneumonia or something wrong with the photos themselves. They put me on a steroid inhaler and told me I have asthma, probably only present from the phases of being ill. That inhaler has really helped me, but I can tell I'm not totally well yet. The dr. had the nurse call the next day to be sure I made an appt. for a follow up x-ray in 4-6 weeks.....THIS makes me nervous. Why would they make a special point for the follow up? We shall see...........of course, just a couple weeks ago I read a long article on lung cancer in women and how hard it is to diagnose until it is too late................Face it, I'm a worrier.
Well, I got this great new recipe for a "Pumpkin Somethin'", also known as, "Pumpkin Dump Cake", my friend Barb says. Anyway it was so yummy I decided to make it for our team meeting as a trial for making it for Thanksgiving, as my son-in-law loves pumpkin pie and I think he will really love this! So I lovingly bought special ingredients (lots of milk and eggs and whipped cream which I don't regularly eat), found a foil 13 x 9 pan in my house (so I wouldn't have to worry about bringing a dirty pan home!) and mixed up the thing. As I was putting it into my oven, the foil pan (which had a wobbly bottom) tilted just enough for 2/3 of the thick liquidy mass to pour all over my oven door, down between the door and the oven into the oven drawer and onto the floor beneath the stove. AARRUUUGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so ANGRY and UPSET!!!!!!!!!!! Now, not only did I NOT have my wonderful treat to take, but I had a HUGE MESS to CLEAN UP!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAARRRRRUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! About 1/3 of the recipe was still in the pan, so I decided to go ahead and bake it to see if it would even bake okay. So during the hour the mess was baking, I was cleaning my kitchen.....at least a corner of it is CLEAN! And Lilo was so happy because 4 of her favorite cat toys were found beneath the stove!!!!!!!!!!
The pumpkin surprise (Humph!) was a hit at the meeting. It did taste yummy and I will bake some for Thanksgiving, but I am NOT, repeat, AM NOT, going to bake it in a foil pan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before I went to the doc on Tuesday I finally figured out, with help from our dear secretary, how to use the internet and special passwords to get into our network so I can do work from our Head Start site. Hallelujah! It has already saved me so much time, since it takes 40 minutes to travel from the Head Start site back to the office.....and then I'm so close to home, I just don't see it worth it to spend that last hour at the office and then head home, so sometimes, I just go on home! Dont' worry, I don't short any hours! I'm often working until 6 p.m.!
I did an IFSP with our PT at a home Thursday. Later she complimented me on how I handled a child displaying some unusual temper tantrums and worked with the mom on it. That's the first compliment I've received on doing a good job with babies. I'm getting there: slowly but surely, my knowledge and experience is kicking in. Wish I'd known about all this stuff when I had my own children. Perhaps my kids, though stable now, would have felt freer to explore and be themselves, earlier on. Oh well, live and learn. I'll make an awesome Grandma someday! Until then I have LOTS of little ones to get my "Grandma fix"!
Friday: I'm chairperson of our work/study group....I gave in to our boss's request for this position......wish I hadn't now! We have one guy on the committee who is adamant that certain agency changes must be made: hiring a person to do the PR work that this work/study group has been asked to do. Well, as much as I agree with him, I just know our agency is not going to collaborate and work out a financial arrangement to hire a person to do this. Our administration just is not in the mode of thinking that far out of the box. Not that they haven't had this person in place in the past. It is a position for which there is no 'extra' money. Anyway, our meeting got pretty heated. I did not know how to redirect it; our boss was there, and even she had a hard time. AFter the meeting this guy was bending my ear, thinking the rest of us just caved in to the direction our boss wanted us to go, which was more of the same hard work that we all agreed got us nowhere and the background research and proposals we might make would end up in the big black hole somewhere between the employEEs and the employERs.....no way of letting us know that our efforts made any difference anywhere, anyway.
As my dear daughter would say................WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got a wonderful pix of my son with his new mustache........actually I liked the picture. He does look a bit more like his dad with his mustache, but his is different and at least he doesn't look like a Mexican his dad looks like with HIS mustache!!!!
My dad has called me FOUR, yes, FOUR times this week, driving me crazy. First, he called me last Sunday and I told him I was sick and of course he wanted me to lather myself with Vicks Menthol and wrap a warm woolen sock around my neck and go to bed. Well, I don't have any Vicks or a woolen sock (I'm allergic to wool). My doctor told me that those petroleum based products are not good to use, as they do damage to one's body.......not sure what (cancer causing like car exhaust?), but it sounded logical to me; I'm not taking any chances. THEN, when I got home Wed, he had called two times, leaving messages asking where I was, as he was worried I was in the hospital....good grief, that must be where I got my "worry" genes! :o) Then Thursday night he called again to see how I was. Last night he called AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As I answered the phone, I said, "Now what?!" He just laughed his wicked laugh. He had ordered a Thanksgiving centerpiece for me and wanted to make sure I would be home to receive it.....on MONDAY!!!! Duh, I WORK!!!!!!!!!! So I hope they leave it on the doorstep, or something, because I won't be here!!!!!!!! I wish he'd just send me the money he spent on the arrangement. His taste is NOT like mine and he prefers fake flowers, so I can bet it will be something hideous. What can I do. I've told him not to send that stuff, as it is just a waste, but he insists. He should have spent that kind of money on my mother and told her that he appreciated her and loved her; he was too busy griping, putting her down and emotionally abusing her, to see how wonderful and giving she was. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Mom died on Thanksgiving. I think that's why dad calls so much around this time of year and why I get even more upset with him. I think his constant badgering and negative influence was a stress factor leading to my mom's early death.
If the arrangement is decent, I'll take it with me to share with my loved ones....or maybe I'll give it to my little old neighbor lady. I bet she'd love to have it to look at. She's 90 and still hanging in there, taking care of herself.
Well, today is Sabbath and I am SO GLAD to have a day of rest. I have a wonderful afternoon planned sharing some Bible study time with my dear friend Marie. We haven't gotten together for ages, and just keep talking about doing some study together. So this should be soul filling.
Tomorrow I will get together with the ex-laws to let them tell me what they'd like me to do in helping with my (ex)niece's wedding reception. They are so excited.....it is fun to see them in this stage.....I've been there!
That's all for now. It is light now and I'm going for a walk. I've got to get healthier!

Sunday morning/ Water Cat
Well, I was very disgusted to receive spamming so soon after starting my blog, Thus I was considering whether to continue it or not. For now I will, as I figured out how to put in another step to at least prevent the automated spams. Grrrrr.
I've been trying to cope with my cold-virus for nearly two weeks, now. Finally, on Friday, I went to the doc and got meds. Thankfully my body responds positively to them! I feel better already!
My finances seem to be in a dither this month. Why, after all I've been through, does this continue to happen? It is a life lesson that I have not learned yet....or perhaps have learned, but am not willing to get it under control!
It is dark and gloooomy again. (Yes, 4-o's!). I've turned on all my natural lighting in hopes of preventing the winter doldrums. If I keep working and staying busy that helps, but being sick has given me cabin fever. I'm not sick enough to just stay in bed and sleep, but not well enough to get out to shop( a blessing since my finances are awry) or go be social.
I get a little down, too, in thinking of my family, as Mom's death was 11/25, Thanksgiving day, and it coincides with my sister's anniversary, which is sad to me, because she is not speaking to me anymore. Thanksgiving ha always been one of my favorite holidays and I hate the negative memories. It's been years since Mom died and the effects have lessened, but my dad tends to call me every day for about 2 weeks preceding thanksgiving, and he rehearses all the events surrounding her death. It is depressing. Thankfully I have a happy life, my children keep me sane and enjoy being together with me (as far as I know). My work is rewarding and my 'soulwork', so life is good, basically.
I have to be thankful for all the blessings I do have: my health, a good job, family who does still keep in touch, friends, a good roof over my head, warmth, a warm, comfortable bed (naps heal!), good food, and a mind that still works.......as far as I know! :o)
WATER CAT
I wanted to be 'good' to my kitty and got her a water bowl that has a filter and circulates the water. She figured out how to take the thing apart (the first night), pulling out the filter, flipping water and parts all over. I was afraid she'd get electrocuted, so I took the contraption back to the store. I did a bit of research to find another that might work, but didn't want to pay the price, so waited. Finally I found a good one on sale and brought it home. It has a clear dome that holds the water and the water cascades down around the outside of the dome into the bowl. Because it is heavy, it cannot be taken apart. I thought it might be a winner, but knowing my tricky cat, wasn't sure. The first night, my cat, Lilo, worked for a full hour to try to get the thing apart, flipping water all over the kitchen! I had to fill the dome again! After one hour, and my surrounding the bowl with a bath towel to sop up the water, Lilo laid down beside the thing.. I guess to keep watch on it. About 3-4 hours later, when I went to bed, I thought she had finally given up.
NO!! Now she thinks it is a game! Daily, she plays with the water in the bowl, putting her paws on the top of the dome to 'redirect' the water flow, flips water out of the bowl, trying to stick her paws under the dome to find the source. It is a stable bowl, so no damage as been done.
I've put a small throw rug under the bowl to catch the water she throws out (which I have to change every other day!), and taped the cord down, so she can't get to that (it is also encased in a plastic tubing). So it has stayed for two weeks, now. it is just a crack up to watch her get up on her haunches to maneuver the water around the dome. Her paws get so wet and cold, but she doesn't seem to mind.
One of my goals for this bowl was to stop her from always licking the faucets for water. It has worked......mostly! I also had to train myself not to turn on the water for her when she tried to drink out of the faucet! I thought she might also leave my Brita pitcher alone, as one day I came home and found her playing with that! Well, last night, I left a pan of water on the stove, and this morning she was playing in That! At least I think she's leaving the Brita pitcher alone!
The story doesn't seem so funny unless you can watch her at this. Perhaps I can get my kids to video it for me and a short clip could be used here.....not sure.

Tuesday, cough, cough
I spent most of the weekend sleeping, as I've succumbed to one of the strains of crud going around. It's affected my chest and I have a nasty cough, but at least the crud is still moving around in there, so I don't think I need to see a dr. ....yet. I'm hoping that having Friday off will help me heal. I took the morning off yesterday and that helped; but today, after my home visit, I'm back at the office and cannot concentrate. I really need a nap, but have SO much paperwork to do....and catch up.
I've enjoyed having C&E's car in my driveway this weekend. Makes me think fondly of them. It will most likely be gone when I get home tonight. They are arriving at PDX this afternoon, then they'll drive the rest of the way home.
I really pray they will be able to get their funds soon to remodel their little house they way they want. They have some great plans!
Dear son is coming home a little sooner than expected from his overseas stint! Hoo-rah! as he would say. I just keep praying he'll get home safely, and have a wonderful life with his new bride.
Today the sun is actually shining, though it is cold...I actually had frost on my windshield this a.m.! I think we are in for a cold, blustery winter! I'm thankful for a good roof over my head, warm heat, cozy blankets and pillows, a kitty to keep me company, a car that, for now anyway, is running (though not like I think it should!)and good food, plus a job to pay for it all! I made a wonderful vegetable stew over the weekend and it will keep me full throughout the week....I'll probably even put some of it in the freezer. Those good soups and stews are great to bring to work, or to eat at home, as they reheat quickly and are so satisfying...as well as healthy. I need to make them more often!
I still haven't filled you in on the saga of the cat dish, but will do that when I can concentrate on one subject for a longer period of time.
Joke for the day:
Do you know what a vegetarian with diarrhea is called.............(scroll down)
A Salad Shooter! LOL
A Salad Shooter! LOL
Sunday morning
HI all! Well, it is Sunday Morning and I'm all 'sleeped' out. I slept most of yesterday and then three friends called I hadn't heard from for awhile, spent about 3 hours on the phone! Then I went back to bed! I've got crud in my chest. We had planned to attend my niece's bridal shower today, but my daughter-in-law didn't come because of the bad weather and now I'm not going because of my crud. My daughter chose to be with her hubby at a conference out of state....can't blame her! What fun!
So here I am; knowing that today I need to do laundry, thinking about all the things I need to do at work....that it would be great to get some extra work done today and maybe be a little more caught up for Monday....but that probably will not happen! I will just piddle around the house and rest!
I ordered a gortex coat this week. My other 'rainproof' coat was of little or no value to resist the downpours and blustery winds we've had this week. I really hate being drippy wet from storms. If I can stay dry and warm 'inside' by outerwear, I can handle it better. SO! Damn the debt! I needed a good coat. I ordered it online and wasn't too expensive........a lot less than those I looked at GI Joe's!
The sun is shining very temporarily and truly tempts me to go out for a walk. Don't know if my lungs could take it, though!
Am listening to the news. Thankfully no BIG news. Heard from Daughter-in-law (dil) that their orders are to stay where they are to finish the Navy stint. I'm SO GLAD!! Son is in Iraq......somewhere. Oh, how a mother worries! Once a mother, always a mother! I'm just glad I have God to rely on. That he's holding my son safe under His wings, protecting him, holding him close to His heart. And I have the hope that if Satan should be allowed to have his way, my son is safe for eternity with our God, Savior and Friend....we will meet again in that glorious, once-and-for-all, homecoming! I look forward to seeing my mother then and I'm sure my son looks forward to being reunited with his Grandpa! Sigh.
For now we have these moments. I need to finish getting a Christmas box together for my son. I really don't know what to send. Any good ideas out there? I will miss him this holiday. I'll miss all my family, as dil will be back east and C&E will be in CA. I've put in for a few days of extra work...that will pay for the new coat and give me some travel money when we Do all get together! That way, I won't get too bored or depressed over my long holiday break.....yea, I'm a teacher, so I get a long holiday break...hey! We need it, since we deal with life's tough issues!
My brain really isn't working too well, this morning. Yesterday, while resting, I thought of lots of things to write; now I can't remember any of them. Oh well......maybe later.

thought for the day
Life is full of challenge and frustration...
But one of these days you'll find a hairstyle you like!

Perhaps pictures next time
PS. I've also a story about Lilo coming up. Didn't want to overload with two stories in one night! I also want to figure out how to add a picture or two.
Oh, the car shop hasn't charged me any more money than the original invoice and paid for all the rental cars! So they've done right, on that score!
